There is a certain buzz in Ghent. Philippe Lefebvre of Ghent Congress is excited about the future of Ghent as a congress city. “The city of Ghent, together with the ICC (International Congress Center), has filed for a subsidy grant at Tourism Flanders regarding MICE investments in Flanders. We have been confirmed that we will receive this grant. Consequently, the ICC will be thoroughly refurbished in the upcoming years towards 2021. The structure will also be adjusted so that several congresses can take place at the same time, which is currently not the case. The look & feel will also be updated.”
The ICC is one of the most important partners of Ghent Congress. “We are therefore working very closely together,” says Philippe Lefebvre . “With the renovation in mind, we will continue to develop processes to communicate about the renewal of the ICC and what it could mean for Ghent as a congress city. Actually, the timing is perfect because in the coming years more hotels will be built in Ghent, which will result in an expansion of 500 new available rooms. Gives a total of 2500 rooms”
At the end of last year, Ghent Congress was integrated within the city tourism department. “It was also decided to work only on associations because we find that’s where we can make a difference,” ends Philippe Lefebvre.

Er beweegt wat in Gent. Philippe Lefebvre van Gent Congres is enthousiast over de toekomst van Gent als congresstad. “De stad Gent heeft samen met het ICC (Internationaal Congres Center) bij Toerisme Vlaanderen een subsidiedossier inzake MICE investeringen in Vlaanderen ingediend. We hebben de bevestiging gekregen dat we die subsidies gaan krijgen. Bijgevolg zal het ICC de komende jaren tot 2021 grondig worden gerenoveerd. Dat zal op allerlei vlakken gebeuren. De structuur zal tevens worden aangepast zodat er verscheidene congressen tegelijkertijd kunnen doorgaan, wat momenteel niet het geval is. Ook de look & feel zal ook worden geactualiseerd.”
Het ICC is één van de belangrijkste partners van Gent Congres. “We werken bijgevolg heel nauw samen”, aldus Philippe Lefebvre . “Met het oog op de renovatie gaan we in de toekomst nog meer trajecten uitwerken om te communiceren over de vernieuwing van het ICC en wat dat kan betekenen voor Gent. Eigenlijk valt alles mooi in de plooi en is de timing perfect want de komende jaren komen er ook meer hotels bij in Gent, wat een uitbreiding met 500 nieuwe kamers zal betekenen. Geeft een totaal van 2500 kamers.”
Eind vorig jaar werd Gent Congres geïntegreerd binnen de dienst toerisme. “Er werd tevens beslist om enkel nog op associaties te gaan werken omdat we merken dat we daar juist het verschil kunnen maken”, aldus nog Philippe Lefebvre .
