On April 19th, the long awaited FMCCA, Flanders Meeting & Convention Center Antwerp, opened its doors. “It was one of our highlights we have anticipated for so long,” says Ilse Van San, Sales Manager Antwerp ZOO Society (KMDA). “It was actually a big success because for the first time we could show a conference center that was completely finished. On November 26th we had already opened the concert hall and the historic wing with a Gala Night, but with the opening of the convention center we are now officially opened and fully operational. Meanwhile, we have received a lot of positive reactions and are already at cruising speed now.”
So far, 31 congresses have been confirmed. Six already took place, and the 7th congress is currently underway. IMEC Technology Forum 2017 (Nanotechnology) accounts for approximately 1,500 participants, 50 booths distributed between the Atrium and a part of the Carnot Wing. “With IMEC we have for the first time a full house multi-day conference. However, we host all kinds of congresses. We started in December with a gynecology congress. Meanwhile, we already successfully hosted the climate congress, Engage 2017, VIB and a number of medical congresses. More medical congresses are planned, as well as the World Symposium of Moustaches and Beards, which this year takes place in Texas and will travel to Antwerp in 2019, thanks to a local ambassador (Antwerpse Snorrenclub). And given the fact that we have a lot of animals with moustaches in the Antwerp ZOO, there is a link and they will become godfather of one of our primates, the Emperor Tamarin. We also have the International Strawberry Congress planned. In short, a lot of variety. Most congresses are international and multi-day events.”
FMCCA wants to book congresses as soon as possible in combination with concerts for its concert hall since it’s also the home of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra (deFilharmonie). “It is an advantage that congresses are booked early so we can plan well in advance. We then can fill in the gaps with other activities,” says Ilse Van San.
Meanwhile, FMCCA’s promotion has been running for three years now. “We have been busy promoting the congress center internationally for three years now. We are always present at IMEX and IBTM, and recently at the Association World Congress in Vienna. We look at where we can best promote our center, together with the City of Antwerp and Tourism Flanders. We are also looking for local ambassadors.”
A Room with a ZOO
The social program with the conference center located in the ZOO is undoubtedly a strong asset to the FMCCA.

You also serve a charity because every euro spent in our congress center is managed by the ZOO Foundation and supports all our work on animal welfare, heritage, cultivation programs, research and conservation. Admit, that’s really interesting for associations,” ends Ilse Van San.
Flanders Meeting & Convention Center Antwerp zit op kruissnelheid
Op 19 april jl. opende het langverwachte FMCCA, Flanders Meeting & Convention Center Antwerp, de deuren. “Het was één van onze hoogtepunten waar we zolang naar hebben toegeleefd”, vertelt Ilse Van San, Sales Manager Antwerp ZOO Society (KMDA). “Het was een groot succes want voor de eerste keer konden we een congrescentrum tonen dat helemaal afgewerkt was. Op 26 november hadden we reeds de concerthal en de historische vleugel feestelijk geopend, met de opening van het congrescentrum zijn we nu officieel helemaal geopend. Ondertussen hebben we al heel wat positieve reacties gekregen en zitten we op kruissnelheid.”
Reeds 31 congressen zijn bevestigd. Zes vonden al plaats en momenteel loopt het 7de congres, m.n. IMEC Technology Forum 2017 (Nanotechnologie), goed voor zo’n 1.500 deelnemers, 50 standen verdeeld over het Atrium en de Carnotvleugel. “Met IMEC hebben we voor de eerste keer een meerdaags ‘full house’ congres. We hebben alle soorten congressen. We zijn gestart in december met het gynaecologiecongres. Ondertussen hebben we o.a. het klimaatcongres, Engage 2017, VIB en enkele medische congressen succesvol mogen ontvangen in het FMCCA. Er staan nog vele medische congressen ingepland, maar evengoed het World Beard and Moustache Symposium dat dit jaar doorgaat in Texas en in 2019 naar Antwerpen komt! Dat hebben we dankzij een lokale ambassadeur (Antwerpse Snorrenclub) naar Antwerpen gehaald. Gezien wij heel veel dieren met een snor hebben in onze Antwerpse ZOO is de link snel gemaakt, ze gaan zelfs peter worden van onze snoraap, de Keizertamarin. We mogen ook het International Strawberry Congress ontvangen in 2017. Kortom, veel afwisseling. De meeste congressen zijn internationaal en meerdaags.”
FMCCA wil zolang mogelijk op voorhand congressen binnenhalen en combineren met concerten. Want FMCCA is tevens de thuishaven van het Antwerp Symphony Orchestra (deFilharmonie). “Het is een voordeel dat congressen lang op voorhand worden geboekt, wij kunnen dat dus goed inplannen. Het is daarna de kunst om de gaatjes te vullen met andere events”, aldus Ilse Van San.
Ondertussen loopt de promotie van FMCCA reeds verscheidene jaren. “Wij zijn al drie jaar internationaal aan het werken. We zijn steeds aanwezig op IMEX en IBTM, en onlangs nog op het Association World Congress in Wenen. We kijken waar we ons centrum best kunnen promoten, samen met de Stad Antwerpen en Toerisme Vlaanderen. We gaan op zoek naar lokale ambassadeurs.”
A room with a ZOO.
Ook het sociale programma met het congrescentrum gelegen in de ZOO is zonder twijfel een sterke troef voor het FMCCA.

Zeg nu zelf, da’s toch wel heel interessant voor klanten”, aldus nog Ilse Van San.
