Olivier Wauters of Eventonline recently made a business trip to Amsterdam. He stayed at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Amsterdam, which proved to be the perfect starting base for the various meetings he attended in the region. During his stay at the hotel, he had a chat with Gaby van den Bosch, Commercial Development Manager.
“Since we started four years ago to work out a master plan with designer Edward van Vliet, the renovation of the hotel now finally came to an end,” Gaby van den Bosch explains. “All hotel rooms and meeting rooms were renovated, be it in different stages, floor by floor, in order to reduce the inconvenience for the guests to a minimum.”
The theme of the hotel is best described as ‘The Golden Age’. Radisson Blu is renown for returning themes of its room types in its different hotels, such as the ‘Maritime Room’ or ‘Scandinavian Room’, but with the ‘The Golden Age’ themed room, the Amsterdam hotel has a unique feature. “The ‘Golden Age’ type room was designed especially for our hotel only and will not be available in the other Radisson Blu hotels,” says the Commercial Development Manager.
The hotel lobby was the last part of the hotel that was renovated. “The hotel consists of two buildings and for one month we have moved to the lobby to the other building. It was indeed a great transformation, reception desks and the back walls needed to be removed, the flooring changed. But the result is something that we all are very proud of.”
Radisson Blu Hotel, Amsterdam opened its doors 26 years ago. Last year the hotel celebrated its 25th anniversary. The hotel is housed in a peculiar building. As Gaby van den Bosch already mentioned, the hotel consists of two buildings, including a former church with adjoining rectory and a paper mill. “The entire rear of the hotel is actually an old church, with our bar located in the old rectory, while the restaurant was originally a Bible shop”, the Commercial Development Manager explains. “In 1990, we decided to put a glass roof in place to create an atrium. The other building was the oldest paper mill located in Amsterdam. Due to all these unique facts no room and no meeting space in the hotel are alike. In Amsterdam you have a lot straightforward hotels with long corridors and similar rooms, but that is certainly not the case in our hotel.” And that makes a stay at this hotel all the more enjoyable.

Beleef de ‘Golden Age’ in Radisson Blu Hotel, Amsterdam

Hij verbleef er in het Radisson Blu Hotel, Amsterdam, dat de perfecte uitvalsbasis bleek voor zijn verschillende afspraken in de regio. In het hotel zelf had hij een gesprek met Gaby van den Bosch, Commercial Development Manager.
“Sinds we vier jaar geleden een masterplan uitwerkten met designer Edward Van Vliet, is de renovatie van het hotel nu helemaal rond”, legt Gaby van den Bosch uit. “Alle kamers en vergaderruimten werden onder handen genomen, in verschillende fases weliswaar, verdieping per verdieping, teneinde de overlast voor de gasten tot een minimum te herleiden.”
Het thema in het hotel is best te beschrijven als ‘The Golden Age’, de Gouden Eeuw dus. Radisson Blu is ervoor gekend dat het in de verschillende hotels bepaalde kamertypes laat terugkeren, zoals de ‘Maritieme Kamer’ of ‘Scandinavische kamer’, maar met ‘The Golden Age’ heeft het Amsterdamse hotel wel iets uniek. “We hebben in ons hotel het ‘Golden Age’-kamertype, dat speciaal voor ons hotel werd ontworpen en dat evenwel in geen enkel ander hotel terugkeert”, stelt de Commercial Development Manager.
De lobby van het hotel is het allerlaatste wat werd gerenoveerd. “Het hotel bestaat uit twee panden en voor één maand hebben we de lobby verplaatst naar het andere pand. Het was echt een grote transformatie, de receptiedesks moesten eruit, de achterwanden werden verwijderd, de vloer werd veranderd. Het resultaat is wel iets waar we met z’n allen heel trots op zijn.”
Radisson Blu Hotel, Amsterdam bestaat dit jaar reeds 26 jaar, vorig jaar werd trouwens het 25-jarig jubileum gevierd. Het hotel is gehuisvest in een apart gebouw. Zoals Gaby van den Bosch reeds aanhaalde, bestaat het hotel uit 2 panden, met name een voormalige kerk met aanpalende pastorie en een papierfabriek. “Het hele achtergedeelte van het hotel is eigenlijk een oude kerk, onze bar is gevestigd in de oude pastorie, terwijl het restaurant vroeger dienst deed als bijbelwinkel”, legt de Commercial Development Manager uit. “In 1990 hebben we besloten om er een glazen dak op te plaatsten om zo een atrium te creëren. In het andere pand was de oudste papierfabriek van Amsterdam gevestigd. Beide unieke facetten maken dat er geen enkele kamer en geen enkele vergaderruimte hetzelfde is in dit hotel. In Amsterdam heb je veel rechttoe-rechtaan hotels met lange gangen en dezelfde kamers, maar dat is hier dus helemaal niet het geval.” En dat maakt een verblijf in dit hotel des te aangenamer.
