The staff of the Flanders Meeting & Convention Center Antwerp is counting down the days till the much-anticipated FMCCA will finally open its doors this autumn. FMCCA is proud to be prominently present at IMEX to proclaim its impending inauguration with gusto.
Erik Wood, CEO of Eventonline, met up in Frankfurt with Chief Commercial Officer Anja Stas when she had a chance to comment on the progress of the works. “We are very pleased so far, as we are both on schedule and within budget and hope to keep it that way because we have a few months left to go.” Indeed, according to the strict planning, the building will be completed in August. “Then we have about three months to test run for the first concert in the ‘Queen Elizabeth’ Hall which will be on 26 November, when the concert hall will be officially inaugurated,” Anja informs. Then another break-in period for the conventions will follow as the first smaller convention is already taking place in December of this year. “The ‘Grand Opening’ for the convention business, however, will be held in the spring of 2017 as, at that stage we will be able to showcase our newly refurbished ZOO as well. It will be an official opening for all stakeholders, both nationally and internationally, both for the meeting and convention industry, and the opening events will be linked to an international workshop. Of course the trade press will also be invited.”
While the ‘Elizabeth Hall’ will be officially inaugurated, the convention center gets a special focus with a specially designed program in the spring with the new ZOO also featured in the spotlight. “Let’s not forget that this convention center is not only located a stone’s throw from one of the most beautiful train stations in the world, but also in one of the most beautiful zoos on the planet. That’s an incredible asset”, Anja Stas points out.
Although the convention center facilities are still to be completed, there are already eight fixtures in the calendar. “Especially conventions in the medical field, but also the Auction of Hoogstraten for instance”, the Chief Commercial Officer added. “In the meanwhile, there are currently no less than 48 events in the pipeline.”
FMCCA’s appointment book at IMEX appears well stocked. “We focus on the countries that surround us. We’re very active in the Netherlands, because Antwerp is a sought-after destination by the Dutch”, explains Anja Stas. “But the UK has been enthusiastic as well, due to the expansion of flights from British cities to Antwerp Airport. We also approach the French and German markets which we tackle together with the City of Antwerp with whom we also work in the long haul US market.”

Nagelnieuw Antwerps congrescentrum FMCCA opent in het najaar
Nog even en dan opent het Flanders Meeting & Convention Center Antwerp eindelijk de deuren. FMCCA is dan ook prominent aanwezig op IMEX om dit met verve te verkondigen. Erik Wood, CEO van Eventonline had een gesprek met Chief Commercial Officer Anja Stas die duiding gaf inzake de vooruitgang van de werken.“We zijn heel blij want we zitten zowel op schema als binnen budget en hopen dit zo te kunnen aanhouden. We hebben immers nog enkele maanden te gaan.” Inderdaad, in principe wordt het gebouw opgeleverd in augustus. “Dan hebben we nog zo’n drie maanden om te proefdraaien want de concertzaal ‘Koningin Elizabeth’ wordt op 26 november officieel geopend”, aldus Anja Stas. Daarna volgt er nog een inloopperiode voor de congressen want het eerste kleinere congres vindt reeds plaats in december. “De ‘Grand Opening’ voor de congressen gaat door in het voorjaar van 2017 omdat we dan meteen ook onze vernieuwde ZOO kunnen laten zien. Het wordt een officiële opening naar alle stakeholders toe, zowel nationaal als internationaal, zowel van de meeting- als de congresindustrie gekoppeld aan een internationale workshop. Uiteraard wordt ook de vakpers uitgenodigd.”
De Elizabethzaal zal met veel luister worden geopend, maar ook het congrescentrum krijgt aparte aandacht, met een specifiek programma in het voorjaar waarbij de vernieuwde zoo bewust in de schijnwerper wordt gezet. “Want da’s ook onze positionering”, legt Anja Stas uit. “Het feit dat dit ‘het’ congrescentrum is dat niet alleen naast één van de mooiste stations ter wereld gelegen is, maar dan ook nog eens in één van de mooiste dierentuinen is een geweldige troef.”
Hoewel het congrescentrum nog moet worden opgeleverd, staan er reeds acht boekingen in de agenda. “Vooral congressen in de medische sector, maar ook de veiling van Hoogstraten bijvoorbeeld”, stelt de Chief Commercial Officer. “Ondertussen zitten er reeds 48 events in de pijplijn.”
Ook de afspraakagenda van FMCCA op IMEX blijkt goed gevuld. “Wij focussen ons op de landen rondom ons. Heel actief op Nederland, want voor de Nederlanders is Antwerpen een gegeerde bestemming”, meent Anja Stas. “Maar ook Engeland is enthousiast, mede dankzij de uitbreiding van de Engelse vluchten naar de luchthaven van Deurne. Verder is er ook nog Frankrijk en Duitsland, markten die we samen met Stad Antwerpen bewerken. Maar Amerika bespelen wij ook actief.”
